If you’re an entrepreneur with bigger dreams and goals, you probably have business coach questions. Because you, naturally, wanna know it’s worth it to hire someone to help you. Right? Of course. I’m the same way. And I’ve certainly had my share of questions.

But what about when a business coach questions you?

Uh-oh. Did I just turn the tables around on you? Well, yeah. A little. But I think there are some questions that work both ways. Like these examples…

“What do you hope to achieve in our sessions?”

This is definitely a two-way question. Because if you AND the business coach don’t have a measurable and specific outcome, how will either of you know where to start? Much less where to end up. Even if you tell your (potential) coach you just need constructive feedback, that’s at least measurable and specific.

“What kind of solutions can help this business?”

That’s a good question to start with. Because, regardless of who asks, it shows a desire to hear another side. Not just jumping in with ideas before you even understand the problems.

“What’s been working or not working so far?”

It’s good to ask this question after the others. Because it helps both sides get a better understanding of what to do more of and what to do less. And, of course, it helps to stay focused on the measurable and specific outcome mentioned before. 

There are plenty of other questions. But I just wanted to share 3 to help you consider whether or not a business coach would help your situation. Of course, I’m biased. Because I’ve seen how much coaches have helped me. And I’ve seen lots and lots of testimonials from my clients who say I’ve helped them.

But it’s not just touchy feely help.

It’s literal business-building help. The kind of help that took 5 figures income earners to 6 figures. And 6 figures income earners to 7 figures.

It’s hurricane season. I don’t have to deal with those kinds of weather problems here in Colorado. But people who live on, or near, the coast sure do. And something those people probably keep a close eye on is categories. You know what I’m talkin’ about. The 5 main power levels of hurricanes. Right?

Yeah, this hurricane season is in full swing right now.

In fact, Sam, is a category 4 storm as I share this.

And maybe you already know this, but they set up categories so people know how to prepare. A Category 1 hurricane has sustained winds of 74-95 mph. And meteorologists warn that damage is possible to mobile homes, trees, and crops. Plus, wind gusts of up to 98 mph may be possible, in addition to coastal flooding and pier damage.

That sounds bad. But then there’s category 2. Sustained winds of 96-110 mph. And crops could be heavily damaged. So could mobile homes and other lighter weight buildings. And there could be power outages.

Yikes. You can see the damage ramping up. But then there’s category 3 with sustained winds of 111-129 mph. And the possible damage is worse. And then category 4 hurricanes with sustained winds of 130-156 mph. Even more property damage. And extensive beach erosion.

Then, along comes category 5 with sustained winds in excess of 157 mph. As you might imagine, the damage can be extreme. And you’ve probably seen and heard the news report during one of those storms. Sometimes they have to evacuate everyone in the storm’s path. I can only imagine riding out those powerful winds.

But…as you know…I’m not here to report the weather.

I just thought it was an interesting way to connect to what I’m talking about in next month’s UNversity lesson. And that’s categorization. And how it helps business owners prepare. I shared a video trailer about the lesson, yesterday. And I’ll be sharing a couple more this week. Because the lesson is the first Thursday of each month. And that’s coming up in 9 days. October 7th to be exact.

Yesterday, I talked about an exceptionally rare, yet extremely important, trait of the ultra successful.

I’ve noticed that people who don’t develop this highly-sought after skill set usually end up settling for a less than a satisfactory job or income.

And that usually doesn’t align with their gifts and talents.

But, before I reveal this rare trait, found only in the most successful people, you have to understand where this comes from…

Last year, I had something happen to me that I wouldn’t wish on anyone.

And it quickly motivated me to take what I teach my 6 and 7-figure clients and condense it down to the student level.

My son had two friends in two years who both committed suicide.

When I got the tragic news, I was horrified.

Then I started to think how that could have easily been my son, too.

That’s when it hit me like the proverbial ton of bricks.

It’s how you learn to gather up the puzzle pieces in your mind, fit them together, and solve problems.

System thinking helps you discover how to make what I call precision decisions.

After 20+ years of working with clients from all walks of life, in my consulting business I observed one trait that almost always separates the successful from the unsuccessful. (to get the most out of this letter, read all the way until the end)

Only 3% of kids are born with this one trait inherently.

The other 97% of us aren’t.

And for the vast majority of us who aren’t born with this, if it’s not learned, it can be devastating. In fact, it’s been recorded that 4 out of 10 college students graduate WITHOUT having learned this one high-profit skill set.

It’s something parents have said for probably every generation. And no doubt you’ve heard it, too. Because older adults tend to think the younger adults have either lost their minds or never had ’em in the first place. So, they see what those younger ones are doing, and they say (say it with me…) “Kids these days.” Right?

But what is it about kids these days? Or any days?

Well, I don’t presume to know all there is to know about even my kids. Much less yours. But I DO know something that’s generally true. Kids (and I mean the ones about to go out on their own) need much different skillsets these days. BUT, there’s one skillset that never changes.

And that’s the ability to System Think.

And System Think is how you develop your vision, your mission, and your plan. A System to help you prepare to own and operate a business, if that’s your dream. Or be able to move through the ranks of cutting edge businesses, if that’s what you prefer.

Without a vision, and a system to see it through, it’s so easy to find yourself doing everything from a position of overwhelmed, urgent stress. I’m sure you’ve felt that at some point in your life. Right? Just about everyone has. And it’s no fun, to say the least.

So, it’s no wonder kids these days feel it, too.

That’s why this week I’m launching RondaReady YOUniversity.

It can be difficult to keep family life and business life separate. And that’s especially true when you’re self-employed or running your own business. I talked about this a couple of years ago when I said how you gotta set boundaries. Because without ’em you can get some unmet expectations. And some people call those premeditated resentments. True for personal relationships. And it’s equally true for business.

So family life and business life need boundaries.

It’s good for your health. Mental AND physical. But I don’t mean some goofy kind of boundary that makes you seem disconnected. Of course, anyone who thinks you’re like that is probably not part of your target audience anyway. But the main things is…other people won’t respect you (or your time) more than you do. So, just know and understand how important it is for you to guard your time.

And never forget…you’re the one definitely in charge of setting your boundaries.

I’ve had lots of talks about this. With my kids. And with my clients and colleagues.

I make sure my boundaries go hand-in-hand with the values and schedules I live and work by. Here’s an example in my life.

Because I value time, in the evening, with my family, I set boundaries on that time. And I do my best to not allow work, or something else, to interrupt that time. My family is so important to me. For a variety of reasons. So, that time is like gold. And I make sure that gold is protected.

Sure, that sounds like a battle plan, when you think of it that way.

But you gotta ask yourself the tougher questions so you can find the better answers. Your family life AND your business life will benefit in big ways. And don’t be surprised when you find yourself feeling so much happier and less stressed as a result. Speaking of results…

I’ve been talking about my System a lot lately. And I’m sure, to some, I might sound like a broken record. But I’ve also mentioned that it’s because I’ve seen it help so many business owners turn things completely around for the better. One great example was all the confidence building news I got from a client a few years ago.

I share a little bit of her story a couple of years ago. But it’s worth repeating. Because it might help YOU if you’re struggling to build a business into the image of your dream. (and maybe you didn’t catch it before)

Maybe this’ll be a good confidence building message for you, too.

And Beth is a remarkable person. She does her best to be right there for somebody when they need help.

Her passion has been to help others keep (and in some cases) regain good health. And she also wanted to make a good second income. But she wanted to do that from home. Because she and her husband wanted to travel and spend more time together.

By the way…those are great reasons to build an income producing business!

But Beth wasn’t willing to settle for “part-time” pay. She figured if she was gonna put her passion for others to work, she’d dive in with a passion, too.

And that’s how I met her.

I bet you’ve seen a movie (or two or three or more) where a spaceship was about to launch or perform some sort of maneuver. Right? And you probably recall how someone in a control room told the captain (or whatever person was in charge) they were switching control over to the ship’s instruments. And when a certain control switch was…well…switched, that’s when the action started.

If you know that a control switch will be turned off, you pay attention.

At least you better. Because, when the action starts, you better be ready for it.

And I’ll go out on a limb and bet that you have long haul commitments. Like, your business. Your family. And other important relationships. So, I’m guessing you already know those things require your commitment to better habits. You want things to last and go well. But none of that happens by accident.

For example…

It’s like dog paddling when you first learn to swim. But you soon discover how tired you get. And how fast. So, you learn new and better strokes to help you swim faster, longer, and farther. Those new and better strokes give you more power over your control switch for swimming.

Plus, you gotta learn how to float so you can rest in the water when you get tired. It’s just not realistic to depend on dog paddling your way across the pool…much less a lake or river.

Once you master the more advanced swim strokes (HABITS) you gain the control and confidence you need to forget about the fear of drowning.

Notice how I capitalized HABITS? Yeah, that’s because I want to emphasize a couple of acronyms for you. First HABITS. It stands for:

Handle
Amazing
Business
In
The
System
