OK, there’s a lot more to this month than just St. Patrick’s Day. So, who’s ready to March into March with something more than a leprechaun sized wish?

Albert Einstein said “If you want a happy life, tie it to a goal, not people or things.”

And ol’ Al is 100% spot on with that one. It’s a fact, people will disappoint you. And even bright, shiny objects can rust or fall apart. But a goal? Now, THAT can fire up your inner superhero. Nothing like a sense of purpose to motivate you to make your mark in this world.

And that’s how you should march into March.

Especially since, as I write this, it’s the very first day of the month. And as the ol’ Do Re Mi song says, “Let’s start at the very beginning, a very good place to start.”

I know (from personal experience, unfortunately) how people and things will let you down. More than once in my life I had all the “appearances” of success. And all the trimmings. But, at the heart of it all, they weren’t happy times. So, all that “success” felt empty. Because something was missing.

Once I stopped putting my eggs into somebody else’s basket, my attitude started changing for good. And once I stopped focusing on things, and started to focus on serving other entrepreneurs, I found my purpose.

What a relief! And what an awesome difference it made in my whole life.

I discovered that getting things more organized in my business life also helped me organize my family life. And that helped me reach my goal of working from home so I could better serve my family. Because I know that’s my most important job.

Whether you realize it or not, you run your people analytics software all the time. Daily. No, not on your computer or your phone. In your head. No, I didn’t say you’re soft-headed. OK, let me explain before this gets sillier.

It’s good to keep your people analytics running every day.

Because people can be, shall we say, unpredictable sometimes. Or they can be something other than what they appear to be.

I remember, when I was a teenager, how my parents gave me some advice about how to cultivate the best kinds of friends. And weed out the unsavory types. They told me, “We don’t drink, smoke, or chew. Nor go with people who do.” I don’t think they were the first to say it. But that doesn’t matter. I heard it from my parents first.

So. What does that have to do with anything you’d be interested in? I don’t know. Maybe nothing.

But then again, maybe you face business decisions you’re not real sure about. And maybe, just maybe, some of those decisions involve other people. Hey, I’ve heard it happens.

And I remember talking to a client about this a few years ago. In our one-on-one meeting she mentioned the possibility of a new potential employee. And she said she wasn’t sure if the new person would be a good fit.

So, I asked, “Why aren’t you sure?”

And she answered, “Because I’m not sure if they’ll be able to bring in enough business to justify me paying them.”

So, my next question was, “Well, how much would that need to be?”

“Uh, I don’t have those actual numbers. And I guess that’s why I’m still riding the fence,” she replied. And she said that last part with a sheepish grin. Because she probably knew what I’d say next. And I didn’t disappoint her.

“Well, there you go,” I said.

“And don’t I always say you gotta know your numbers?”

That short conversation had a happy ending. Because once I helped her dive in and clear up her numbers, she saw she couldn’t afford to hire someone. At least not right away. Imagine what an awful experience it would have been, for her AND her new employee, if she had hired someone only to have to fire them not long after.

And that’s sort of the tip of the iceberg when it comes to people analytics.

Because you also gotta know your core values. And exactly what any new employee’s duties will be. Yes, I said “KNOW.” Not “think” or “guess.” And absolutely, positively don’t “wonder” about it. KNOW.

Physical fitness is good for so much more than YOU

How’s your week going so far? As I write this out, it’s only Tuesday. But I hope you’re taking care of yourself. Get out there, in the fresh air and sunshine, and move around if you can. And be sure you drink a healthy amount of filtered water. Hydration is so important for your brain. Of course, don’t forget nutritious food. And did I mention plenty of sleep? Oh yeah, make sure you get that, too. I hope so. Because your mental and physical fitness requires it.

And your physical fitness is crucial to your fiscal fitness.

Yeah, it works both ways. And I could give you links to lots of websites with research that backs up what I’m saying. But you know it’s true. Right? You know how much easier it can be to own and run your business when you’re healthy and happy. Because you can focus better, produce more, and follow through like a champion.

A couple of sisters decided to open a new cupcake bake shop. What could go wrong? I mean cupcakes. Sisters. What kind of bakers wouldn’t want a delightful cupcake business? And everything was great. For about a month. And then the cupcake recipes started to get, let’s say, a little dry.

Not the actual cupcake recipes.

Because the actual cupcake recipes helped them produce some delicious delights. But their bake shop didn’t pull in enough people to pay the bills. I’ll take public opinions for $300, Alex. Uh-oh, I might be in jeopardy of showing my old-school days if I talk about certain game shows. Right? Well, so what. You watch what you want. And I’ll watch what I want. And that includes video clips from old game shows. Because they’re so funny.

One of those old game shows was Family Feud.

I looked it up. And that show started in the 1970’s. Apparently it’s still seen on TV. With a new host and still with plenty of wacky contestants. I wonder if the new host, Steve Harvey, turns around and says, “Survey says?!”

Doesn’t matter. I’m not gonna watch the show. I just don’t have time. But I wonder. Because it leads me to this.

What could or would a survey say about your business? And the reason I ask is because a client of mine told me she didn’t “have a clue” what her customers wanted from her next. So, I suggested she take a survey.

And she said, “Take a survey? That sounds complicated.”

But I showed her how it doesn’t have to be. Here’s what I told her. And you can do this, too.

Create a list of some questions important to you and your business. And if you’re unsure which survey software you’ll want to use, don’t let that be an obstacle. Create your questions anyway. And save them in a word document (or Pages if you’re on a Mac). Name it the 90 -day Action Plan Survey Questions. Make it more creative if you like. But you get the idea. And make it a bold, red font to remind you it’s not complete yet.

Then go to your task calendar.

You’ve got one, right? Good.

Now, create a task named Research Online Survey Software. And set it for a day you’ve time-blocked to work on your business. When you decide which service to use, create the survey. And then come back to the manual to update it and change the red font. And don’t let any steps that follow be an obstacle. Just get the first steps done.

This should help show you how progress means way more than perfection.

And besides, perfection is impossible. It’s just a disguise for hesitation and procrastination. Now, this is a simple process, but it’s not easy. But, with my RondaReady Business System it can certainly be a LOT easier. Because a lot of the work is already set up for you there.

Besides, if it was all real easy, everyone would be doing it. And you know as well as I do, they’re not. So, that makes you the exception. Go ahead. Give yourself a pat on the back.

Have you ever had to witness a couple in a heated argument in public? No fun, right? I believe they call that “cringe” these days. For good reason, too. And I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in corporate meetings where heated opinions drowned out any hope of some productive talk.

But productive talk is a choice so many don’t choose.

And why would anyone prefer to avoid it? Well, I learned a long time ago, when communication is difficult for you, at least talk about that. Sounds funny, right? But here’s what I mean.

Be willing to let people know when it’s not easy for you to communicate what you feel or mean. That’s actually a great way to get communication, aka: a productive talk, started. And don’t be surprised if the other person shows a lot more understanding than you thought they would. Because there’s a good chance the feeling is mutual.

But if you’re worried you might lose your composure, stick to the following tips:

  • Remember to breathe. Anxiety can negatively affect your breathing and lead to more anxiety.
  • Communication isn’t a race. So keep to your rhythm. And you’ll keep your composure.
  • Be quiet. People who are comfortable with silence often appear to be the smartest in the room. Negotiations 101 says whoever speaks first loses. Don’t let that be you.
  • Listen. Pay attention to questions. And give direct answers. They don’t hand out prizes for the longest answer. And the more words you use, the more likely you’ll say or do something wrong.
  • Focus. When you get off topic, you lose your audience. “Just the facts ma’am”

Remember, you have two ears and one mouth for a reason.

You learn a lot more by listening. So, if you wanna be heard, listening more will help. And that kind of communication will help you make sure productive talk is one of the easiest parts of your business.

You’ve probably enjoyed some sort of big accomplishment in the past week or month. Right? Well, I’ll bet you a dragon and a unicorn that it didn’t happen all at once.

And a much deserved compliment. Because you did what the vast majority of people will never do. You followed through. And you didn’t give up when you discovered yet another step you had to take. And I’m sure I don’t have to remind you how many unforeseen steps you got through.

See what I mean? Your accomplishments definitely don’t happen all at once.

So, remember to celebrate as you complete those steps along the way.

Reward yourself for hangin’ in there. That helps you stay motivated. And you deserve it! Plus, it’ll keep you on track to accomplish your dreams and goals. And there’s nothing like a proven system to help you stay on track and enjoy your victories.

You can compare yourself to others. Unless you prefer reality. Because the reality is, what you see about those others, usually isn’t reality. Just a little bit ironic (but it shouldn’t be surprising) is that nobody has a perfect profile.

It’s sort of like this. Ever been to a nice cocktail party? Or how about all those pictures and profiles on social media?

When I first started creating profiles online, I wanted to put my best face forward. Who wouldn’t? So, I made sure to get a professional picture. Set up a cover image with the “right info.” And then I checked out what others were doing, online, to be sure I was holding my own. Don’t wanna come in last, right?

But then it dawned on me. People show you only what they want you to see.

And what so many want you to see is their “perfect” profile.

But here’s an even bigger problem than that. If you look around enough, you can always find others you’re “better than”. So, it’s not all that difficult to convince yourself that you’re all that AND the bag of chips.

But those kinds of comparisons can slow you down from being the best YOU possible.

The true measure of a perfect profile, or as close as you can get in this world, is simple.

Are you moving forward?

Are you taking action each day to get you closer to what you want in your life? If you are, then it doesn’t matter what others are doing. Because what they do can distract you from your dreams and goals. Unless there’s something in their content that helps motivate you. In that case, go ahead and use that to help you build momentum.

But remember- your success comes from following YOUR path.
