What to do when you hit the results time lotto?

If you read my recent article, I think you probably realize the importance of being in charge of your schedule by now. Right? Great. Now, I wanna talk about classifying time. And in particular a part of it I call results time. If you’ve hit the results time lotto, you probably need some serious help. I’ll explain. But, before I get started with that, I’d like to share a quick story.

When I was a new mom…finding my way through my work time, husband time, kids time, and personal time… my mom told me something I’ll never forget. She said, “If you don’t call the shots for how you spend your time… someone else will.”

SO TRUE!

To be even more blunt, it’s like that old saying:  “The Lunatics are running the asylum.”  Not a pretty picture. So I think enough said, yes? OK, here are three simple terms for classifying time I learned from a real estate industry coach. And they’re easy, so here you go.

Results time – It’s another way of saying working IN your business

Remodel time – when you’re working ON your business

And Recovery  time – or time away from your business.

Right now I wanna focus on Results time.

Most people start a business and spend the majority of their time (if not all of it!) working IN the business. They become the “technician.” That’s called hitting the results time lotto. Not a prize you want or need. And people who never grow past this stage tend to burn out, drop out, or white knuckle it all the way through to the end. Or, they allow the business to become just a hobby.

Now…why is it important to classify time this way? Well, it’s really about the use of time. That old 80/20 rule sneaks in here. Most people start out being self employed, and they spend the majority (if not every last minute) working in RESULTS time. Results like…How many actual phone calls and appointments did you make today? Did you write up those contracts, yet? And don’t forget about meeting clients, managing personnel, and doing all the other paper work, etc. etc. etc. 

The first business book I read, way way back, was Michael Gerber’s “Emyth.” It opened my eyes. I saw how, if I thought of my business not as an extension of myself, but as its own entity, I could build something remarkable. Not just create a glorified job for myself. I mean…create an income-producing business that would produce even when I wasn’t the one doing everything. YAHOO! I’M IN!

Great results are a vital part of your business.

But you don’t wanna win the results time lotto. And I realize, in the beginning, you’re responsible for getting most things done. But as you grow and develop, as a business owner, you need to spend less and less of your time in results. And you should go from 80% of your time in results to spending 80% in remodel. I’ll talk about that another time. So, for now…

Business concepts and a proven system

Plan for success, but watch out!
You might actually get it.

Now…ask yourself “What do I want and why do I want it?” Your answers will become your focus…the vision to keep you on track. Most people focus on the how and that’s why they quit. But you’re not most people. You’re smarter because you’ve got your focus and you’re creating your plan for success.

Plan for success and then you can get there

The foundation of my RondaReady online business coach CRM system is based on setting you up with YOUR system. Then, you can use your new tools to develop better habits. All great business owners are successful because they build solid systems to help them form better habits. And whether you believe it or not, habits can make or break you. Habits create clarity. And clarity helps acknowledge actions. It’s vitally important to be in control of your actions instead of playing the victim of your circumstances. 

Take this action to plan for success: Choose better words to describe yourself.

For example…“I can’t”  vs  “I don’t”.  One is wimpy. The other one is powerful.

The more clarity you can develop, the more likely you’ll take action and plan for success.

Once you clarify your values and identity, then you can move to scheduling or “clarity of actions”. Actions like…activities, events, and tasks. And they’ll be clearly outlined and organized to guarantee you have the time and energy to accomplish what matters most.

It’s so much easier to stick with habits when they easily connect you to value.

There was a hilarious episode of “Frazier” where he and his brother, Niles, were super focused on their IQ scores. Check it out when you get the chance. It was so funny. Build business relationships better

Bob (not his real name) discovered he had missed a deadline with one of his prospective customers. Her paperwork had been misplaced, and by the time he found it, he couldn’t get the estimate to her in the timeframe he promised. But instead of coming up with a story to hide his mistake, Bob decided to email his customer and tell her the truth. It was a risk. But he knew it’s a bigger risk to build business relationships on lies. It worked out well, but that part of the story is a secret.

Build business relationships with apologies when needed.

Bob (again, not his real name) showed me the email he wrote to his prospective customer. As I read it, I could see he was completely honest about misplacing her information. And he let her know he’d understand if she was no longer interested. But he offered sincere apologies…and said he’d make it up to her if she still wanted to go forward. He asked if I thought it would be the right approach. Of course, I told him you can never go wrong by telling the truth.

Also…when you’re open and honest like that, it shows you’re human. With human weaknesses. Letting down your armor and admitting to those weaknesses can help build business relationships better. Because it shows you don’t consider yourself more important or valuable than those you serve. And that builds trust. And trust is the foundation of all relationships…including in business.

Sharing the reality of your day might not be easy at first. You might see some other business owner, seemingly more successful, and think they’ve got it all together. But you might be amazed at what goes on behind the scenes in their organization. Then again…you’ve got a lot going on behind the scenes, too. No wonder there’s an occasional missed phone call, email, or text. Right? But you can always show you truly DO care by going that extra mile. Nine out of ten other businesses won’t do that these days. You’re the ONE.

Picture a nice return on investment

Heidi is a professional photographer in Colorado Springs. She’s the best photographer I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. Her talent behind the camera is second to none. Be good to yourself
Hey, you might even like it

Vacations are great aren’t they? Remember, when you were growing up, how much you looked forward to summer vacation? Or even IN school when you couldn’t wait for the holiday. Or spring break. You certainly didn’t need anyone reminding you to be good to yourself back then. Right? But then you left school and entered the workforce, and things changed drastically. What happened?

Maybe life made you forget how to be good to yourself.

If you have a regular job, maybe your employer tells you how many weeks you get for vacation. And you schedule it, of course. Because, after all, it’s paid time off. And gotta use it or lose it. Right? Or maybe you’re self-employed. One of the main reasons you went out on your own was to be able to work WHEN you wanted. And HOW you wanted. Sound familiar?

Well, what happened to all that nice scheduled time off? Did you discover there’s a whole lot more to building a business than sitting on the beach with a laptop? Have there been some unexpected roles you’ve had to play? If so, don’t feel bad. Most of us entrepreneurs have that same experience. It’s where the dreamy eyes turn into reality eyes.
