Turn your what if questions downside up

What if questions you asked yourself didn’t have to be full of doubt? Stop asking yourself “What’ll I do if I try this and it fails?” And start asking yourself, “What if I become a huge success?” Don’t you love the sound of the second question? “But Ronda” you say, “What if I ask myself positive questions, and negative things still happen?” Well, then you give up, of course! Or…

Keep asking positive what if questions until you can answer them positively.

It’s almost like a mysterious, invisible force builds inside you when you think and believe you can achieve what you want. Yeah, it’s sort of like the more you believe you can do it, the more likely you can achieve it. And at the very least, you’ll just flat out feel better when you focus on the life you really want. When you feel better, you’re more likely to take action. And, when you take action…BAM!  Action takers don’t tend to have regrets. At least not about not going for it. So, live big. Live positive.

Stay the Course and change your direction

I remember a line from the Netflix series, “The Money Heist” that went something like, “When you think you have nothing to lose, you get stronger.” And I wondered, “Does it have to come to that? Or wouldn’t it be better to simply stay the course of what works?” And what works is a proven system AND the willingness to take risks. Here’s what I mean…

If you knew when your last day or hour of life would be, would you be more daring? Would you take more chances to be truly happy? Experience more of life? Do you think it’s because you don’t know that makes you play it safe?

I recommend you don’t stay the course that doesn’t work.

But what does…right? What can help you get stronger? For your body, it’s working out. Self employed blues to business owner dreams

Claire had been through a couple of rough years in her business. Her industry was taking a beating, and she experienced it up close and personal like a lot of others. In fact, it got so tough she even contemplated giving up leaving the self employed life and returning to corporate life again.

Time is money – how much you got?

We know it’s true. Right? Maybe a better way to say it is, “money represents time.” So, why don’t we act like time is money…or money is time? I guess I can understand it more from younger people who still think they’re gonna live forever. But for those of us with a few more years on us should know better. And since we don’t seem to know better we do things like this…

Way, way back when I was younger (maybe I still thought I’d live forever…who knows?) I had a neighbor who was a crazy shopper. At least that’s how I saw it. Because, every week she’d drive to 4 different stores to get her weekly shopping done. One store for produce, one for paper goods. Another one for its deli. And so on. I saw how it took her just about all day long. She said the reason she shopped that way was to get the better prices.

But time is money, so you gotta watch your time.

So, let’s say you’re a business person who does the same thing. You have your database with one system. And your marketing automation is in another system. Maybe you use Google calendar or Apple’s Calendar on yet another system. Then, your performance management is on still another system (or no performance management at all).

And that might not be the worst problem.

Maybe you also depend on a team member or family member to help you with all those systems. They’re not familiar with any of them, and they can’t help you make the best use of any of them. But they’re willing to help out for “free.” There’s that pesky word. Free. Remember time is money. So if somebody’s willing to help, but you gotta help them understand the system, that uses your time. Your money. And that means it’s not so free after all. Right?

The more time you have to spend on different systems…or showing someone else how to use them, the more money you lose. If you chose to own a business because you wanted more money and freedom, you need your own eco-SYSTEM. A system for your personal and business economy. And you can run a well organized, efficient business capable of supporting the life you want with a proven system.

So, I recommend you don’t waste your precious time trying to save money with various systems in multiple places. As a business owner your time is extremely valuable. And your number one job is to create solid, duplicatable systems so you can grow your organization. Because if it ain’t growing…it’s dying.

Time stands still for no one.

Free systems are not free. They’re just fragments. You might get part of the way…but not the whole way to success. Don’t waste your time “fixing” things and finding “work-arounds.” Invest in your business. A great system saves you time. Time to grow your business.

Persistent work helps you to get out of your own way

Persistent work requires vision.

It’s true. If you can’t see yourself doing something, it’s almost impossible to do it. But when you can get a clear picture of your end results, the impossible becomes possible. Do first impressions matter?

On a scale of one to ten, where would you say you rate when it comes to first impressions? Do people warm up to you right away? Or do you think it’s something you need help with? Here’s an example and something that might help…

A one-on-one client of mine told me she outsources some of her work to colleagues. It’s mostly the kind of work my client doesn’t want to do, or doesn’t have time for, or isn’t as good at. One of the people she outsources to does a great job. But my client said she doesn’t like referring people to her for one side issue. Because the other person isn’t good with first impressions.

Remember, first impressions aren’t always face-to-face meetings.

As a matter of fact, here’s a simple little thing you can do. It only takes about five minutes, and it can help you make an impressive first impression. Your voicemail. Now I said it CAN help. But your voicemail can give a bad first impression, too. Don’t leave the message on your voicemail up to the default “robot” voice. It’s not likely to impress anyone. So, take a little time to think about what you’ll say, and write it down or memorize it. Then, record your message with your most confident personality shining through. AND…don’t forget to add your unique value to the message.

People might continue to do business with you because they already know you. And maybe they’ll put up with, or overlook, your quirky or eccentric personality. But they won’t necessarily refer you to others who don’t know you or won’t “get you.” They just can’t afford to chance your bad first impressions costing them business.

Hey boss, have you tried the monkey solution?

One of my clients told me, the other day, how one of his employees likes to drop stuff on the boss’s desk. And this is stuff the employee was hired to do. After all, that’s what employees are hired for. To lighten the boss’s load. And to take on the day-to-day tasks so the owner (or boss) can focus on getting more business. So, I listened to my client for a while and then asked him, “Have you ever heard of the monkey solution?”

“What in the world is the monkey solution?” my client asked.

So, I shared this short story…

Years ago, when I was still in the corporate world, a new manager I met noticed how workers would go to the boss or owner with too many questions or problems. He was talking about questions and problems they should have been resourceful enough to figure out on their own. I agreed that was a problem. And he told me how you don’t have to just send them away in shame. Or belittle them by asking why they couldn’t solve the problem themselves.

He said he liked to teach them how to find the answer on their own. Then, once they saw how it was done, he’d send them back out with three more problems to solve. As he put it, “one monkey in…three monkeys out.”

Of course he was showing me how to get the monkey off my back, so to speak. And once I took his advice, soon enough those daily interruptions became a thing of the past. That’s the monkey solution in a nutshell. Or should I say coconut? No, I shouldn’t.

Here’s one more tip.

Schedule time each week to touch base with your employees. Or to even touch base with your systems if you don’t have employees. Make it a consistent time and day, every week, so they can know they’ll have your undivided attention. And make sure it’s undivided. Job Security does not exist

I’ll bet you read that title, job security does not exist, and you couldn’t wait to dive in to read about it. Right? Not! But it’s a topic I think at least some people should think about. Maybe you’re one of those people. Let me ask you a couple of questions…

Do you think it’s too scary or intimidating to be in charge of your own job security with a business? Or does it give you more anxiety to think about leaving your employment up to someone else? Those aren’t trick questions. And the answers you give don’t determine my opinion of you. The world needs employers AND employees. And thank goodness there are plenty of people to fill both roles. But…

You should understand job security does not exist for employers OR employees.

For example…Just this week I heard about the layoffs of two of my family friends. And they were both laid off from jobs they thought were very secure. And if you’ve been watching the news recently, you’ve noticed some large companies folding. Companies that were giants of their industries…for decades. Like Sears, Kmart, and Toys R Us.
When large companies close, job security goes out the window for all the employees AND the owners of those businesses. Many families are affected. Our economy is affected…at least for a little while as adjustments are made. Even the owner of Amazon.com, Jeff Bezos, said he believes his gigantic online business won’t be around after a while. What?! No Prime deals? What will we do?

Now…it’s not all bad news.

I’m not talking about how job security does not exist as though this is a new phenomenon. It’s not. Businesses have been folding and dying for as long as there have been businesses. Here’s what I want you to consider…
If you’re one of those people with a desire to own your business, do it! There are probably plenty of people in this world who need what you have to offer. And your product or idea might resonate with enough people to help you build a nice business. And support yourself and your family…and others. So, don’t let fear hold you back. Don’t just trust that it’s safer to work for someone else. It’s not always.
