Speaking of unexpected referrals (we were speaking about those, weren’t we?) I read a story about a project management consultant who was asking for referrals. As the story went, apparently he worked mainly with large manufacturers. But he happened to be in a small gift shop and the woman who owned it heard about his need for referrals.

She overheard a conversation. And then she told the consultant she’d like to help and asked him what he did. But he figured she was small potatoes. What could she possibly do? And he even told her as much in so many words.

But she asked him to tell her more about his business. And he just kept his more or less arrogant attitude and told her she probably never heard of any of the people he needed to meet.

And here’s where the unexpected referrals part comes in.

Since the consultant chose to hand off some attitude, the gift shop lady said no more to him. But, as it turned out, several of her own clients were large manufacturing companies. And she personally knew several of the executives in those companies. AND her own father-in-law owned the biggest manufacturing company in town.

But the consultant had been rude. So, she kept all that information to herself. And let him move on.

Here’s a couple of key points about that story. First, just because somebody runs a “small business” doesn’t mean they don’t know anybody who runs a bigger business. And second, quality referrals (even the unexpected ones) happen when you build good relationships.

I remember, back in my younger days, a neighbor who was a crazy shopper. I mean, I don’t know what else to call her. Because, every week, she’d literally drive to 4 different stores to get her weekly shopping done. She drove to one store for just for the produce. And another store for paper goods. And then she had to go to her favorite deli. It was an all-day journey.

I asked her why she shopped that way. And she simply said, “To get the better prices.”

I didn’t tell her this, at the time, but that’s a textbook example of a crazy shopper.

Because you gotta put more value on your time. Especially these days when everything is going up and up. Like, I don’t know…uh…gas prices? Yeah!

So, let’s say you’re a business person who does the same thing. And you put your database in one system. And your marketing automation is in another system. Then, maybe you use Google calendar or Apple’s Calendar on yet another system. But your performance management is on still another system (or no performance management at all).

Do you realize what that makes you?

Sorry to be the one to break it to you. But yes…a crazy shopper.

Because the more time you gotta spend on different systems…or even showing someone else how to use them, the more money you lose.

And if you chose to own a business because you wanted more money and freedom, you can kiss that idea goodbye with multiple systems.

The thing is…you need your own eco-SYSTEM.

A system for your personal and business economy. So you can run a well organized, efficient business. A business that’s capable of supporting the life you want.

Here’s the definition of fear I found in my computer dictionary. “An unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat” So, based on that definition, do you think fear holds you back in your business? Or is it really something else.

I don’t think fear holds you back.

Because what part of your business is dangerous? Or likely to cause pain? Or is some kind of threat. I mean, unless you’re a deep sea explorer, or a soldier, or a fisherman in the icy North Atlantic, those descriptions probably don’t fit you.

No, I think what holds you back (if you’re someone in that condition right now) is confusion. Because there are tons of choices when it comes to running a business these days. And then there are tons of tools you can use. And then there are tons of marketing professionals telling you tons of way to do tons of things.

Whoa! That’s definitely not a ton-of-fun. Right?

And when you have so much information to choose from, it can cause what some marketers call “analysis paralysis.” You just examine and examine and research and research. And before you know it, another year flew by without the forward momentum you hoped for.

Is this hitting any buttons with you?

Well, I shared a quote, a couple of years ago, that still applies. It’s from Peter Nivio Zarlenga. He’s a well-known American businessman who said, “Action conquers fear.”

And then, I shared another, even more famous guy’s quote: “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Of course, that’s from Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd President of America.

So, maybe rather than focusing on fear, it might be a better idea to focus on getting rid of confusion. Information overload. And it would be a good idea to plug your business into a System that can help you clear up the confusion, organize the brain clutter, and make more progress.

You’re familiar with King Midas and his ability to touch anything and turn it into gold. Right? Yeah, that’s where we get that expression, “He sure has the Midas touch.” But how did King Midas get that ability?

Was the king born with the Midas touch?

According to the popular children’s story, the king received his golden gift from a Greek god. And the reason why he received the gift depends on which version of the story you read. He might have gotten the “gift” as a result of  doing good deeds. Or it might have been because he was greedy and the god wanted to teach him a lesson.

Either way, the gift turned into a curse.

That’s right. The king found out he couldn’t eat anything he touched because even food turned to gold. And worse than all that was how he turned his daughter into gold when she ran to him and hugged him.

But there are two points I’d like to make about the story.

One: No one is born with the so-called “Midas touch.” And two: Things aren’t always as they appear outwardly.

Some people seem to attract success like bees to honey. And you might have someone in mind, like that, right now. They look successful. And they sound successful. In fact, maybe they truly ARE successful. But I can just about guarantee you they weren’t born with a special “touch” that got them where they are.

In almost every case, successful people are systemized.

They figured out, through trial and error, how to build and work a System. OR…they found a System they could plug into so they could automate and delegate the “smaller stuff.” So they could focus on the big picture.

Over the course of the past 20 years or so, I’ve helped lots and lots (and lots) of businesses plug into an amazing System. And it’s a System that helps them automate and delegate. And it’s a System that helps them measure and track their performance. Plus, it’s a System they didn’t have to build from scratch.

Yes, it’s my RondaReady System. And yes, I’m biased. But only because I’ve seen my System take 5 figures businesses to the 6 figures level. And 6 figures businesses to the 7 figures level.

But I witnessed something else, too. Every one of those success stories was connected to someone who dug in and worked hard. Not one of the success stories was connected to someone with the old Midas touch.

It’s a question that comes up regularly. Especially when new entrepreneurs or business owners see the dollar amounts. Why hire a business coach. Well, how about I toss out some numbers? And you can maybe get a clearer perspective about it.

One web page, with the headline “Why Hire A Business Coach” shared these numbers.

According to the International Coaching Federation there are currently over 53,000 business coaches  around the world. And that number is up from the estimate of 47,500 professional coaches in 2011.

Plus, a third or more of the 53,000 business coaches are in America. And, according to the article, demand shows no signs of slowing down. But what does that look like in dollar amounts?

Well, for example, the American market for coaching reached a little over $1 billion in 2016. And that was up a lot from the $707 million in 2011. But even more interesting was how “experts” figure that number will continue to grow at a rate somewhere around 6% to 7% annually.

Those are interesting and significant numbers. But I don’t think they reflect the true benefits of hiring a business coach. Yes, I have a bias, since I’m a business coach, but I don’t base it purely on a feeling. Because I’ve seen personal increasing numbers over the years, too.

As business has adapted more and more to the online world, there are lots more things to consider as you build your business. But the basics never change.

It still comes down to how well you set up your System.

If you have a clear vision of who you are, what you’re excellent at, and how you’ll execute your ideas, you’re good to go. And I applaud you. Most entrepreneurs and business owners can’t say that.

But if my description doesn’t fit you, it’s nothing to be ashamed of. Because the System Thinking way of doing things isn’t taught in school. And it’s not even passed down from business owner to business owner. But it IS what I teach. And my 6 and 7 figures clients tell me, again and again, how much they love it.

At my last corporate job, my boss made up the title “Performance Advocate” for me. I really liked it. And I’ve worked hard to live up to it ever since. It’s helped me develop a LOT of client referrals. And even though some so-called “gurus” say you shouldn’t depend on client referrals to build new business, I know they work. Maybe better than anything else.

So, if you wanna build new business, you won’t go wrong with old-school.

And I have enough good ego to love a good compliment. Don’t you? After all, you never get tired of hearing how your work is appreciated. Right? And a client referral? Well, there’s no better compliment.

At least not when it comes to measurable results. And I’m talking about the most important measurable results. Like more business, more money, and more resources for your family.

What made all that wonderful referral stuff happen?

Well, one major factor is both of these clients are so coachable. And they’re willing to do the work. Which makes me and my RondaReady System look amazing. (Hey, like Babe Ruth said, “It ain’t braggin’ if it’s true.”)

A friend of mine is a big Steely Dan fan. If you’re not familiar with Steely Dan, I’m told they were a popular band from the 70’s and 80’s. Of course, I’m way too young to remember. But apparently they did sort of a jazz rock fusion style of music. And my friend, who played music for a living for years, used to play some of their songs. He mentioned one called “Do It Again.”

And when I checked out the lyrics to Do It Again, it made me wonder.

First off, I gotta admit, I didn’t understand the first verse. But the second and third seem to be little short stories about someone who keeps doing knucklehead stuff. And the results appear to be a repetitive circle that don’t improve. They words say…

You go back, Jack, do it again.
Wheel turnin’ round and round.
You go back, Jack, do it again.

Sounds bleak. But I enjoyed the song in spite of that. Catchy beat and good instrumentation.

Anyway…

I didn’t share that because I felt like reviewing a band from way back. Actually, it got me thinkin’ about how so many business owners and entrepreneurs are like that. They keep goin’ back to the same wheel that’s turnin’ round and round. And they don’t get off that merry-go-round goin’ nowhere.

But, in their defense, it’s almost always because they followed the same path so many recommend. Get a business degree. And get out there and follow your passion.

It’s not horrible advice. But it’s not necessarily good either.

Because, these days, a college degree doesn’t carry the weight it once did. And you can literally educate yourself into a high-paying job. Or, better yet, into a sustainable, scalable business. But you gotta take the time to invest in yourself.

And that’s why I developed my RondaReady business-building System. Because I want to help go-getters and “risk takers” have the best possible chance at success. And absolutely nothing compares to a system to help you avoid so many of the pitfalls most business owner wannabes experience.

I was thinking about a sad story a client of mine told me. She said a friend of hers, another business owner, fell out of a tree while working in his front yard. And he had to be in a hospital for a few weeks. But that down time isn’t the worst part. Because the worst part is his business made no money during that time.

But why would down time stop a business from making money?

Because, like so many business owners and entrepreneurs, that guy built a business that completely depended on him. In other words, if he doesn’t show up, neither does the dough.

And that kind of down time can lead to a lot of extra expenses and loads of extra stress. And I probably don’t have to tell you what terrible things stress can do to you. Right?

My client, who shared that story with me, said she’s so thankful I helped her set up a system for her business that helps her avoid her friend’s worries. And she told me the automation in the RondaReady CRM makes a lot of her administration work “pushbutton easy.”

Did you ever see the movie, Money Pit, with Shelley Long? They play a couple who can’t afford an expensive house. But they get conned into buying what appears to be a beautiful mansion at a bargain price. But, like so many things in life, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

And their house turned into a money pit real fast.

First, their beautiful stairway fell in. And they had to get it fixed. Cha-ching! Then, a bathtub fell through the floor. And they had to fix that bathroom AND the floor below. Cha-ching! After that their “fancy” chimney fell down. And they had to figure out how to get that fixed. Cha-ching!

It was just one disastrous Cha-ching after another.

They got to the point where they decided to renovate the whole house. But even that turned into a horrible mess. Everything from contractors with high prices to certain parts they couldn’t get done until certain other parts were done.

It was a nightmare I hope you and I will never, ever, ever experience.

And it makes me feel warm and cozy knowing I have a comfortable office in my home to write, develop, and produce my business from.

Plus, it makes me appreciate all the time I spent, all those years ago, developing the System that helps me keep things going as smoothly as possible each day. Without my System, I might be constantly trying to dig myself out of a business pit. Because business without a System, can be like that so-called “bargain” mansion.

It can look good on the outside, but be crumbling from the inside.
