I think it’s very interesting how things start. Take May Day for example. For a lot of people it’s a day of celebration. But for aviators it’s more like this info I found in an article this morning.

“The term ‘Mayday’ originates from the French phrase ‘m’aider’ which means ‘help me.’ It was first adopted as a distress signal for aviation in the early 1920s. The credit for its implementation goes to Frederick Stanley Mockford, a senior radio officer at London’s Croydon Airport. The term was chosen because of its distinctive sound and clarity, making it easily recognizable over radio transmissions.”

You’ve probably watched at least one air disaster movie with the May day call. Right?

The article I read included a couple of real-life examples of pilots who had to make the May day call. Here’s one that happened right here in Colorado where I live. It was United Airlines Flight 232 back in 1989. It went like this:

  • During a flight from Denver to Chicago, the DC-10 aircraft experienced an engine failure that caused the loss of all hydraulic controls.
  • The pilots declared a Mayday distress call, alerting ATC and emergency services.
  • Despite a crash landing in Sioux City, Iowa, the effective use of the Mayday call ensured that rescue operations were quickly initiated, resulting in a remarkable survival rate among the passengers.

So, it’s not just something a pilot yells out over his communications system for effect. It’s a hugely effective alert to get attention where it needs to be as fast as possible. I fly often enough that it sounds like a great plan to me.

Now, on the other hand, May Day is also a day marked to celebrate the halfway point between the vernal equinox and the summer solstice. Sort of midway-through-spring thing. It also has roots in the labor movement. But I prefer to stick with the spring thing. So picture Maypoles, flowers, good food, etc. Yeah, let’s stick with that.

OK, so how do those two May Day descriptions apply to YOU?

Don’t get more clients! Because getting more clients could mean getting more headaches.

I bet you didn’t expect me to tell you not to get more clients.

But, if you’re a certain kind of business owner or entrepreneur, and you DO get more clients, it might not go so well. Because some small business owners (hopefully not you) haven’t set up a system to properly serve their current customers or clients. And as a result, their customer service is mediocre, at best. And a business killer at worst.

A friend of mine recently took his car to a repair shop to have the brakes fixed. And the shop is a well-known establishment in his home town. The owner has been in business a long time. And they do good work.

But after my friend dropped off his car early that morning, he didn’t hear a word from the shop all the rest of the day. And even by 11 the next morning, he still hadn’t heard anything about what the car needed. Or how much the estimate would be. Or anything at all for that matter.

Do you think my friend was ready to give the repair shop a glowing review. Absolutely not.

Now, compare that with a story I shared about my experience with a car repair shop. Here’s a little of what I wrote about it…

“My car was making a weird noise as I took off for my first appointment this morning. So, I called Integrity. They booked me an appointment. And I actually got there early. But they went ahead and took me in early. And they looked over my car quickly, repaired it, and had it out in no time. Even better than that, they clearly explained to me what the problem was. And what it took to make the repair. And, like I said, it was all in record time. That was awesome because I had such a busy day ahead of me.”

See what I mean?

Which one of those shops do you think should get more clients or customers?

Yeah, shop two. No contest.

Because shop one forgot about customer service. And customer service is like have a secret weapon or super power these days. Because it’s the most affordable way to build relationships. And building better relationships is the number one way to attract and get more clients.

Better service equals more business. Simple.

But too many business owners don’t work on those relationship skills. If you’re honest with yourself, and you see your customer service has room to improve, don’t focus on getting more clients. Focus on serving the ones you already have, better.

Even the Rolling Stones, who sang “Time is on my side,” know that all the time in the world ain’t what it used to be. Mick Jagger, their frontman, will be 81 this summer. Yikes! He’s obviously running out of time.

Sure, when you’re 20, you can sing “time is on my side” and feel like it’s true. But then, you blink a few times, and “suddenly” you’ve got a lot less time. And it’s so easy to waste your time on unnecessary distractions and interruptions. Crazy, but true.

So, since you don’t have all the time in the world, you need control.

A lot of marketers and software companies call it time management. But I call it schedule control. Sure, it’s about managing time so it doesn’t manage you. But I prefer to take control instead of just finding a way to manage it. And that’s true for life’s distractions and interruptions. And there are tons of them. Right?

Here’s a little factoid about that.

Did you know, every interruption or distraction from your work, takes 5 to 7 minutes to recover from? In other words, it can take that long to get back on track. Because you gotta get your mind back in the right gear. And you gotta figure out where you left off.

And those 5 to 7 minute distractions can add up to a HUGE waste of time.

That’s all productivity time you can’t afford to lose. And you’ll definitely never get back.

And it doesn’t even really feel good. Does it?

When you can’t stay focused, anxiety and doubt can creep in. Not good for you, your business, or anyone around you who’s affected by your lack of productivity.

That’s why I recommend this…

When you’re working at your desk, don’t have more than one thing in front of you. Don’t be outnumbered. It’s like having more than one kid trying to talk to you. You can go nuts. I know. I have three. So, keep your work “One Thing at a Time.”

A lot of people spend a lot of time scrolling through newsfeeds or timelines.There are distraction destroyers available. Browser extensions. But you gotta be really serious about getting ahead in your business. And not spending time on things that take you nowhere.

I’ve said this a lot of times. You don’t have to lead the way. It’s OK to admit you’re not a business owner. And it’s even OK to stop trying to be a business owner. Here’s something else I’ve said before. “It takes business owners AND employees to run a successful business.” But you’ve gotta decide which one you are. Before you waste too much time. Because if you’re gonna be the leader, you don’t need to overwhelm yourself learning a shipload of new skills.

A better use of your time would be to organize and delegate that work to someone else.

And doubt and fear certainly won’t help you get there.

Plus, when do they show up? Not when things are going great. Right? Because when things are going great, and you’re on your best game, no problemo. But when something negative happens, life’s challenges and obstacles, where do you go then?

Before I do, though, here’s a quote from Napoleon Hill that certainly helped my business life.

“Reduce your plan to writing. The moment you complete this, you will have definitely given concrete form to the intangible desire.”

It’s almost like something magical happens when you write it down for you and your business. But it’s not magic. It’s just the best way to turn your thoughts into something you can see. And you can use your phone (or tablet) to write out loud. Yeah, you don’t even have to type anything these days. You can just use your phone as a recording device. And then use it to create a transcription of what you just said.

Like I said, we are quite the lucky dogs to have all that at our fingertips. Wouldn’t you agree?
